Hi, I just built my computer a few days ago and I noticed my memory isn't showing up as dual channel for some reason. I'm using Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard with 2x4gb G. Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 and i5 3570k.

What slots are being used now? Memory is installed in pairs. If slots 1 and 5 (counting from left to right) have the existing memory then slots 2 and 6 would be where the next memory modules would go. If slots 1 and 3 are currently where memory is then slots 2 and 4 are most likely the next "set" of memory slots. The manual doesn't detail this.

In order for dual channel to work, you have to have 2 sticks of ram. On the motherboard, there will be two gray and two blue slots (usually; sometimes the colors differ but it's essentially the same).

The two technologies are independent of each other, and many motherboards use both by using DDR memory in a dual-channel configuration. Operation. Dual-channel architecture requires a dual-channel-capable motherboard and two or more DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5 memory modules.

I am looking at the manual, because I have one.
The manual is correct, but it is how the slots were numbered and placed.
When you see 1, 2, 3, and 4, you are assuming the slots are in order of 1, 2, 3, 4.
The slots are actually from CPU side going away from CPU is 4, 2, 3, 1.
Used to be, motherboard manufacturers used 2 different colored slots so that all you needed to do is place RAM in the same colored slots for dual channel.
Once upon a time, color coding had a meaning.

I think you're missing the issue, what i stated in the OP dual channel slots 2 and 4 an issue with the way I was numbering the slots as I used the exact method they used so there was no confusion there.
However as I said in the OP these configurations are for single channel and it makes no sense that they are saying this is in the same channel.
Which is correct This is just really strange to me.

Alternately referred to as multi-channel memory, dual-channel memory is a DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 chipset on the motherboard providing RAM with two dedicated high-throughput data channels. The channels permit reading from and writing to memory to occur on distinct channels. To take advantage of a dual.

As long as slots 1 & 2 have the same color retention clips they should run as dual-channel. There's a lot more to RAM than just speed (MHz) and size (GB) and Dell PCs can be very fussy about RAM. Some brands are just better quality and then there's the number of chips on each module ("rank"), latency etc, etc.

I was looking at the MSI Z97-Gaming 7 motherboard and it has 4 memory slots, yet it says it's dual-channel. So that makes me question, why does it have 4 slots? Can you use the 4 slots together, like 4x4gb for a total of 16gb memory? And if you can, can you use different types of memory on it, like 2 HyperX fury whites and 2 HyperX fury blacks?

I got a cheapo combo deal from Fry's a few days ago-- a fairly generic ECS NFORCE6M-A motherboard with an Athlon 64 X2 6000+.
I've got two 1GB DDR2-667 sticks to install.
The documentation is lousy, though, and doesn't mention how the memory dual channel slots 2 and 4 are wired.
They're in two sets of two, dual channel slots 2 and 4 the sets are the same color.
Normally, one would use slots one and three, and slots two and four for dual channel RAM configuration, right?
Where should I put the two modules?
Alternatively, what's the easiest way to tell if I'm configured correctly?
Is there a quick memory bench I can run to see if I'm in dual channel mode?
If not, try slots 1 and 3.
this web page majority of board manufacturers use same color slots.
One exception is MSI.
Hit the PAUSE key on the POST screen and most boards will say what mode the RAM is running in.
If not, then use CPU-Z as JustaGeek mentioned.

Remember to make sure that dual channel slots 2 and 4 installing your RAM you only install it into slots of the same color so that the motherboard can activate the multi-channel memory technology.
All you have to do beforehand is make sure your motherboard is compatible with your RAM.
This means if your RAM is DDR, DDR2, or DDR3, dual channel slots 2 and 4 board must be compatible with that type.
If it's not, you'll know because the breaks in the DIMM slots are different for each of the types of RAM.
Also, it's more stable and you'll get more speed by using fewer memory modules.
So rather than loading a board up with 4 or possibly dual channel slots 2 and 4 8 DIMMs, try to keep it down to 2 or 4 in order to increase the speeds that your system will be capable of achieving.
Multi-Channel Memory Technology: Multi-channel architecture is a technology that increases the transfer speed of data between the RAM and the memory controller by adding more channels of communication between them.
Theoretically this multiplies the data rate by exactly the number of channels present.
Dual-channel memory employs two channels which theoretically doubles the data transfer rate.
Higher-end chipsets like the Intel i7-9x series and various Xeon chipsets support triple-channel memory.
Intel has released 2011 chipsets that support quad-channel memory.

I recently bought an HP Sleekbook 14.
These are the specs: Microprocessor 1.
I want to use this laptop for gaming and photo and video editing.
Slight, but unnoticeable performance hit go here with full dual channel.
I'd go that route.
The 8gb option though is dual channel slots 2 and 4 of out of reach since prices in my country are quite high and I wouldn't know what to do with the remaining 2gb stick.
Thanks for the response.

Which would give a better performance: installing a 4gb module 6gb total but in single channel or installing a 2gb module 4gb total but in dual channel?
See I made in 2011.
It's for Sandy Bridge, but the memory performance of Ivy Bridge is very similar.

John Here is the theory, do you believe it?
Not really my concern.
Does it work perfect in the real world?
I don't really know.
Asymmetrical RAM Array, for most notebooks this means two SoDIMM's of different sizes.
What can match up pair does and functions as "Dual Channel" in theory doubling the bandwidth vs one.
Of course no memory controller gets even close to that, notebooks are far behind desktops on that.
The remaining un-matched runs and expansion slots buses channel.
So as "Dual Channel" both should dual channel slots 2 and 4 the same as both have 4GB in "Dual Channel".
But what happens when the needs exceed 4GB's?
With the 4GB you do dual channel slots 2 and 4 Pagefile hit.
Does this work perfect?
I doubt but the Pagefile hit is such a penalty that real world I suspect 6GB would function better than 4GB.
People like to say synthetic benchmarks are of little use and a bad representation of real world.
While on many things such as that video card vs this video card or that drive vs this drive or CPU vs CPU I tend to disagree and find them useful.
But benchmarks on the memory I do find to be problematic.
While I don't know dual channel slots 2 and 4 of them so can't be certain it seems.
At least some benchmarks will say test 5GB but won't hit the Pagefile.
So the 6GB gets a score based on 4GB in "Dual" and 1GB "Single.
The 4GB will only get 4GB tested.
Now say it tests 4GB.
On the 6GB it might pull some of that 4GB from the 2GB un-matched once again giving the slanted non real world advantage to the 4GB.
The old thought that More RAM is better still holds true in my opinion.
There is no real world penalty, also never confuse 2 SoDIMM's of different sizes with running a 1 SoDIMM, not the same at all in an Intel chipset.
AMD I just don't know.
I am assuming we are just mixing size not speeds or latency that can complicate it a bit but in general more is usually still better.
Like I said does this all work out in the real world?
Well my stopwatch broke and I don't have time to fix.
Take it or leave dual channel slots 2 and 4 />Believe matched is better than more, all up to you.

I agree that the benefit of not using the pagefile is one that benchmarks find difficult to measure, so that is a further bonus of more RAM.
However, the "more is better" rule breaks down if actual RAM usage is substantially less than the RAM provided.
Some people talk of upgrading from 2 x 4GB to 12GB, in which case I ask them to check if they are actually using all 8GB before adding olg slots and casinos commercials />Remember RAM is dynamic and so is Windows.
RAM is used as a storage pool too for opened apps, so unless you're actively utilizing all 6GB RAM at the same time, which is impossible given the bandwidth, you won't suffer a performance penalty.
For Win7 and for most people 8GB is the sweet spot IMHO, both in price and performance.
Beyond 8GB for most users they just won't gain any benefit.
Only reason I have 32GB RAM is because a I can b RAM Disk is useful occasionally c more VM's.
